Resolution & Interactive Reconstructions

The ICONO machine’s interactive reconstruction feature is a powerful tool that allows users to refine imaging volumes and maximize the information captured in each voxel. While it doesn’t fully "unbin" the data like the Micro DynaCT protocol, it provides valuable enhancements in image quality and flexibility for specific use cases.

What does an interactive reconstruction do?

Interactive reconstruction processes the acquired volume data (typically 512x512x512) into a region of interest (ROI) defined by the user. By focusing the reconstruction on a smaller ROI, the system reallocates its resources more effectively, resulting in increased detail per voxel—down to 0.1 mm resolution. This can provide clinicians with more nuanced and diagnostically useful images, particularly in areas requiring finer detail.

MicrodynaCT vs Interactive Reconstruction

  • Micro DynaCT: This protocol achieves true unbinning of the detector pixels, reaching resolutions of 3.8–4.2 line pairs/mm. This means Micro DynaCT can distinguish vessels as small as 0.12–0.13 mm and achieve visibility for structures as small as 0.08 mm based on clinical images.
  • Interactive Reconstruction: While interactive reconstruction doesn’t unbin the data to Micro DynaCT levels, it uses the acquired 512x512x512 dataset more efficiently. Smaller VOIs (volumes of interest) allow for higher voxel resolution within the defined area, enabling the user to highlight key structures without requiring the resolution of a Micro DynaCT acquisition.

Application & Benefits

  • Fine-tuning the ROI: Interactive reconstruction allows users to focus the reconstruction process on a specific region of interest, providing enhanced clarity and detail in the areas that matter most for diagnosis or intervention.
  • Improving detail per voxel: By reallocating the 512x512x512 dataset to a smaller reconstruction volume, the system increases the effective resolution, providing richer information without requiring a full Micro DynaCT acquisition.
  • Enhanced workflow flexibility: The ability to adjust the reconstruction parameters dynamically makes this feature ideal for tailoring the dataset to specific clinical or research needs, whether visualizing tiny vessels or focusing on devices.
